Open Session in WTC2012 Bangkok “Planning Better and Resilient Cities

The Open Session during WTC2012 will be the second session to be held as part of the ITA Global Perspective Programme. The Bangkok Open Session will look at the need for planning the use of underground space.

The session will consist of three parts. In the first part the question “How do Cities Plan for the Use of Underground Space” will be asked. Two speakers will provide insights into these questions. The practice of the Paris Region will be presented as well as the UPAT approach which is used by ISOCARP to help cities solve planning problems. A panel discussion will follow to further explore this question.

The second part of the Open Session will focus on the Bangkok Floods and the aftermath. A special report will be given by a representative of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. In the following panel discussion and audience interaction, we will focus on the question: “How can Underground Space contribute to City Resilience?”.

ITA’s Global Perspective Programme is aiming at demonstrating to the world how underground space use can play a role when faced with challenges such as rapid urbanisation and city resilience to natural disaster and climate change. In the third part of the Open Session we will look at how this programme can help the Tunnelling Industry. Lessons will be drawn from the Responsible Care Programme which has been introduced successfully by the chemical industry. Industry leaders will form a panel which will discuss the challenges the industry is facing and how the Global Perspective Programme can help.

The Open Session will be held with ISOCARP, one of three of the Global Partners involved in the programme.
